Can I mount it to my bicycle stem?
Since the adjustable clamp pivots 90° to the body of the Bike Mount for iPhone, it is possible to attach it to most stems. The diameter of the stem should be less than 38 mm (1.5”) for proper attachment.
Does the light/proximity sensor still function while the iPhone is inside the Bike Mount?
When the iPhone is in the Bike Mount the light and proximity sensor are both covered by the top shield. To keep the iPhone from automatically dimming go to Settings > Brightness and switch “Auto-Brightness” to “Off.” The iPhone should now maintain its brightness level when the light sensor is covered.
What does “weatherproof” mean?
Weatherproof means that the Bike Mount will protect the iPhone from most external weather conditions when the iPhone is properly locked inside a Bike Mount. This includes wind, snow, and rain under most normal conditions. If conditions are so severe that it is unsafe to ride a bicycle (e.g., hurricane, typhoon, flood, avalanche) it is unlikely that the iPhone will be protected. The Bike Mount will not protect your iPhone from complete submersion in water.
Does the iPod Touch fit the Bike Mount for iPhone?
No, the iPod Touch does not fit the Bike Mount for iPhone due to its thinner design. While adding a spacer may allow the iPod Touch’s touchscreen to work while in the case, it is not recommended. The Bike Mount for iPhone is intended for use with iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3Gs only. NOT COMPATIBLE WITH iPhone 4.
Can I ride with it on a MTB/Off-Road?
Riding in off-road conditions can generate tremendous forces and shock on a bike and rider. Though the silicone liner of the Bike Mount provides shock resistance, using the Bike Mount off-road is not recommended.
What is the maximum diameter bar that the Bike Mount mounting clamp will accept?
The Bike Mount will attach to any bar of 38 mm (1.5”) diameter or less. That includes most bicycle and motorcycle handlebars and bicycle stems.
Are extra clamps available if I want to use the Bike Mount on more than one bike or if I damage mine?
Yes, we are making them available beginning in the fall of 2010.
Can I charge the iPhone while it is inside the Bike Mount?
Absolutely. The Bike Mount for iPhone is designed with just this purpose in mind. There is a special hollow area inside the silicone seal that is designed to hold the dock connector of the original charging USB cable that came with your iPhone. Once the case is closed, the silicone liner will form a seal around the cable.
Can I access the camera when my iPhone is in the Bike Mount?
Yes. There is a sealed window on the rear side of the case to allow the camera to continue to function fully while inside. If you want to film video or take snapshots while riding, simply tip the iPhone vertically while it’s in the Bike Mount and aim the window on the back as you would the lens of the camera.
Can I make calls while the iPhone is in the Bike Mount?
The Bike Mount is not intended to allow use of the phone directly while it is in the case. The speakers would be muffled by the silicone liner, and the microphone would be encased in plastic. If you want to use the iPhone as a phone while inside the mount there are two options:
- Bluetooth headset. The Bike Mount will not interfere with Bluetooth wireless functionality, and the Mount would remain sealed completely during a call.
- Cabled headphone/microphone like the one that comes with the iPhone. This requires opening the sealed headphone jack, so care should be taken during inclement weather that no water or dust gets inside while the seal is open.
Will there be a Bike Mount available for other types of phones?
If there is sufficient demand we will definitely consider introducing mounts for other types of phones, but we currently only offer one that fits the iPhone.
Will there be a Bike Mount that is compatible with the iPhone 4?
We currently are working on a solution for the iPhone 4 and plan to have something out later this year. Please check back on our website for updates and announcement of availability.
